O P P O R T U N I T Y
John 12:7-8

You’re certainly aware that this competition or any game could be your last opportunity to put on the uniform and to compete.  Any number of things could bring one’s career to an end.  Not the least of those is graduation and the end of one’s eligibility.  Jesus gives us some wisdom for how to handle opportunities toward the end of a season.

The situation is recorded in John’s Gospel at chapter 12 and verses 7 and 8, where we read, “Then Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of my burial.  For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.’”

Mary had done something very expensive and very extravagant as an expression of her devotion to Christ.   One person in the room didn’t react very well, thinking she was foolish and wasteful.  His name was Judas.  He didn’t realize the significance of the moment like Jesus did.

It could be the same with you and your team today.  Be aware of the significance of the moment, the import of the day and take full advantage of the opportunities you have to express appreciation to those who are helpful to you and your team.

Be a little extravagant in expressing your thanks to your coaches, to your teammates and to those most highly committed to your team.  In so doing, you’ll be like Mary, knowing this moment will not always be available.  Have a great day of competition.
