Power, Love and Discipline
Every once in a while we encounter an opponent in competition who by all accounts is unbeatable and it prompts fear in our team. Some opponents seem to grow larger and larger as we approach game day. The media reports and word of mouth reports have us thinking these people are giants. How shall we approach such an opponent?
In Paul's second letter to his timid friend Timothy, at chapter 1 and verse 7 it says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love and a sound mind." Your opponents on the athletic fields are good and worthy of your respect. They are not, however worthy of fear!! The work of God's Spirit within us does not bring fear, but courage.
Instead of fear, here is what God has given us:
1) Power... not just physical power, but power that comes from within.
2) Love... not an emotional attraction to a guy or girl, but a powerful force that seeks the highest good for those around us. Concern and sacrifice for teammates, coaches, family... that's real love.
3) A sound mind... not just doing well in school, but mental soundness related to doing the right things and to correct assessment of the truth.
As you approach your competition, be assured that your opponents are not worthy of fear. Beyond that, exercise power, love and soundness of mind in a day of greatness in competition.
